Everyone knows the adage, "you are what you eat." And scientifically speaking, it's true! You are what you eat because what you consume accumulates in the body and can impact the body over time, including toxins. The food industry wants you to drink “Natural Orange Juice”

There are 3 critical reasons why you must be wary about starting your day with the tall glass of concentrated OJ.

Let’s call a spade a spade:

The food industry is above all an industry. Its biggest concern is how to fatten corporate wallets, even at the expense of fattening consumer waistlines.

If you've seen on TV that a particular food is "healthy" or "natural", ALWAYS do your homework. You see, these are just catch-phrases and anyone can use them, including the food industry that makes billions of dollars by pumping unhealthy foods into our bodies.

Did you ever hear of the toothpaste conundrum? It’s a famous legend that goes like this:

For years, a certain toothpaste manufacturer wanted to know how they could sell more tubes of their sparkling, mint-flavored toothpaste. They tried claiming it “whitens” teeth. They claimed it helps improve bad breath and embossed “prevents tooth decay” on the side of the glistening red tube. But at the end of the day, nothing worked. They could not possibly figure out how to sell more.

Then one day a marketing executive made a suggestion: "Let's widen the mouth of the toothpaste tube to be double its current size." And voilà…by making the customer apply more toothpaste to their toothbrush, they increased sales.

It’s a rather betraying story that perfectly illustrates how industry plays off us for its own good. Doesn’t it?

So, let's get back to orange juice…

Think about it

Orange juice and oranges are NOT the same! While both are a good source of Vitamin C, a whole piece of fruit gives you additional vitamins plus over 600% more fiber with nearly half the calories and half the sugar of a cup of juice.

Fiber is a crucial part of any detox diet, as it helps prevent constipation and improves the health of your colon, which is an important player in the detox process.

High-fiber foods also tend to be more filling, so you eat less and stay satisfied longer. Win-win!

…and please allow me to raise another red flag: search the Web for the term “natural orange juice” and within seconds you’ll see who the leading orange juice companies are.

Now, I’m sure you’ve heard of them, but what should raise a red flag is the fact that Pepsico® and Coca-Cola® own them!

In fact, Coca-Cola owns TWO major orange juice companies.

Seems outrageous, doesn’t it? If this is causing the hairs on the back of your neck to rise, you are right to be concerned about this.

Commercial orange juice is made by extracting and filtering the juice, then concentrating it to be reconstituted later before bottling or chilling for “not-from-concentrate” products. But don’t get excited about that last option—these are generally pasteurized to prevent undesirable bacterial and fungal growth. That means it is heated to a point that also destroys vitamins, enzymes, and even some key phytonutrients and flavor components. Because flavor sells, not-so-natural methods are used to make up for the losses. Then come the additives to preserve the juice for shipping and sales—both of which involve time and conditions that result in further nutrient destruction.

All these facts point to a food industry—or more precisely, a soft-drink beverage industry—that cares about selling more juice…and more juice…and more…at the expense of our health… even if we aren’t drinking “real juice.”

And like the soft-drink mega-conglomerates’ sugary beverages, their OJ products contain a lot more calories than you’ve been led to believe. That said, it should come as no surprise that one major orange juice brand even puts a disclaimer on its carton by stating the TRUTH: “Not a low-calorie food.”

Which brings us to our next reason:

Your orange juice probably contains refined sugar

Refined sugar? Yes! REFINED sugar!

If you are thinking to yourself, "Ok, I'll just substitute orange juice for another commercial fruit juice," that might be the worst reaction.

Let’s be absolutely clear: the same problems that I've described regarding commercial orange juice apply to all such fruit juices—many of which just barely make the fruit content cut-off to still be called “juice.” This SUGAR issue, combined with deceptive marketing ploys, is how the multi-billion dollar food industry continues to entice consumers to purchase products that are purported to be healthy, when in reality they are not.

In trying to make you believe that your fruit drink is natural, you might find that it contains dextrose or fructose. But don’t be fooled! Those are just some technical terms used to confuse you. Dextrose is sugar and fructose is sugar. Period. When packaged in natural foods along with fiber and nutrients they’re fine—but when added to food products to cut costs, they are at best refined and concentrated to a very not fine point. And at worst? “Fructose” on food labels is very often marketing loophole language “for high fructose corn syrup,” a.k.a. an artificial sugar that is WORSE for you than regular sugar!

That’s why two respectable medical researchers from the University of Glasgow are warning us that, “Drinking fruit juice is potentially just as bad for you as drinking sugar-sweetened drinks because of its high sugar content.”

Did you digest that?

Most commercial fruit juices have just as much, or even more sugar than soda!

Excess sugar in our diet is probably the number one thing demanding attention. And it’s not just orange juice you have to worry about. It’s all big brand fruit juice.

Think about it

Your body needs sugar for energy, and will even produce glucose from protein and fat if it has no other source.

However, sugar can be poisonous to your body when refined, concentrated, or overeaten. Consuming certain types of sugar can increase your risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart and liver disease.

Even worse, it’s probably as addictive as cocaine and heroin and harder to avoid than tobacco or alcohol.

It puts your body in fat-storing mode

The last reason that manufactured orange juice in the morning is a horrible idea is because of the way it is made.

Oranges are a great fruit and you know that they’re jam-packed with fiber and vitamin C; however, during the juicing process, many companies strip out the fiber and other nutritious elements from the fruit during the manufacturing process.

The fiber in fruit normally reduces the spike in blood sugar. With the fiber taken out, you are essentially left with sugar water. Even if the fiber is added back in, as in “with pulp” orange juice products, your body knows the difference.

Consuming too much simple sugar, like the kind you find in concentrated juice, causes your blood sugar to spike. And when your blood sugar is too high, it puts your body in fat-storing mode, essentially telling your body to store anything you eat as fat. Blood sugar levels are directly related to insulin levels. The higher your blood sugar, the more insulin your body has to put out to manage it. Some of your blood sugar goes to your cells to use as energy. And the rest is stored as fat. That’s why insulin is also known as your fat-storing hormone. Eating—and drinking—too much sugar can exaggerate such insulin activity, magnifying weight gain beyond just the simple caloric effect.

There you have it: 3 reasons to compost your store-bought OJ and never buy it again!

Why you should NEVER
go to the extreme…

Now that we’re learning about your health, it is very important to remember to never go to the extreme. And whether you’ve hit a weight loss plateau or you’ve decided to begin your weight loss journey to lose 10, 20, or 30 pounds or more, it is critical to take the right steps.

And the truth is, it can be fruitless or even deadly if you’re not careful and overdo it from the get-go. Here are some extreme ways people try to detox to lose weight, and the worst part about these is that they can all backfire—to the extreme.

Extreme Method #1

Juice Cleanse

A classic “detox” juice cleanse is designed to give you vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables without actually, you know, eating fruits and vegetables.

Can it work? Can it really be that simple?

Well, truth be told, they are high in vitamins and minerals…but on the flipside, they are low in the fiber, healthy fats, and proteins that your body needs to use those vitamins and minerals.

It sounds nice, in theory: to flush the toxins out of your body by drinking refreshing juices; the promise of feeling light and energized without consuming a whole load of calories. But it just doesn’t work that way. In reality, juice cleanses just leave you feeling hungry, weak, light-headed and unable to focus. You’ll probably be in a bad mood, too. That’s because of another BIG problem caused by juice cleanses:

The sugars in the juice can also produce serious blood sugar spikes, which destabilize your mood AND future weight loss potential. Just as concerning, following a juice cleanse for the extended time recommended may drive your body to “starvation mode,” which is a well-known recipe for fat gain.

Starvation mode isn’t about getting skinny. It’s quite the opposite: it’s your body’s way of protecting itself from famine by hoarding every possible calorie and storing it as fat, while burning your muscle tissue. This is what the body does to protect itself when it thinks that nourishing food is scarce. By building up your fat stores, your body tries to ensure that you have the means to survive a long-term food shortage.

Now that’s fine if you’re actually caught in a famine or you’re lost in the wilderness.

But going into starvation mode is supposed to be a temporary measure, not a lifestyle.

And following a juice cleanse is only going to push your body deeper into starvation mode and farther away from the healthy cleanse your body really needs.

Extreme Method #2

Colon Hydrotherapy

It sounds harmless, though not exactly pleasant: lie on a comfortable table and have warm, filtered water pumped into your rectum through a disposable tube.

Harmless? Think again.

According to the Georgetown University School of Medicine, side effects include abdominal pain, bloating, dehydration, kidney failure and perforated colons. The downside of a perforated colon goes beyond excruciating pain and the inability to eat or drink: it also means spreading colonic material to the rest of your body where it is absolutely not supposed to be, including your bloodstream—setting the stage for a deadly condition known as “sepsis.” If you’ve heard of it, you know it’s the opposite of detox.

Once, a 31-year-old woman went to the emergency room with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. She felt weak, feverish, and light-headed and showed signs of dehydration. She told the doctor that two days prior, she had gone to a “cleansing center” for a colonic cleansing, but was unable to complete the process because 15 minutes into the procedure, she developed painful cramps. Less than an hour later, she developed diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

These risks of colon hydrotherapy—also known as a colonic or colonic irrigation—are due to the fact that the procedure employs a mechanical object and can use up to 16 gallons of water and other substances like coffee. Sometimes herbal preparations are used, and these have been linked to aplastic anemia and liver toxicity. Toxicity? I thought that’s what these procedures were trying to treat!

So even in the odd event that it does help shed a pound or two, we can’t explain why people willingly do this, when it’s hard enough to get them to go to the doctor for medically-necessary colonoscopies. Your colon does a wonderful job of detoxifying you on its own if given the chance and the right support.

There is no need to artificially pump water and other substances through it in order to remove waste.

All you have to do to keep it clean, healthy, and functioning beautifully is feed it properly, and you’re going to get a link to the best detox foods at the end of this report. And as an added bonus, I attest to the fact that not only are these foods totally harmless, they are also absolutely delicious!

Extreme Method #3

Liver Cleanse

So you think your liver is holding you back from losing weight?

Well you’re partially right!

You see, your liver plays a crucial role in both detoxifying you and helping you burn fat. Many people believe that eating certain foods and taking various herbal supplements can support their liver in these functions.

However, while there are a few high-quality supplements out there, many supplements contain nothing but harmless filler—if you’re lucky.

What’s more worrisome is that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has actually issued a warning about liver detoxes because one side effect of “liver detox supplements” can be liver failure.

Yes, you read that right!

Can you imagine the heartache of sitting in a doctor's office a few weeks after beginning a liver cleanse, only to be told the devastating news that you've practically destroyed your own liver?

But that’s not all. Some popular liver cleanses are no better than juice diets, which leave you starving and your metabolism in shambles. Other methods which rely on eating mostly fruits and vegetables while taking laxatives can cause gallstones to form and dislodge. Left alone in your gallbladder, too many gallstones can already be a problem. But get one stuck in your gallbladder duct, and you’re looking at emergency surgery. No, thank you!

Think about it

The liver performs over 500 functions! Among its many roles is neutralizing toxins that enter our bodies.

But by overindulging in alcohol or becoming obese, we run the risk of developing fatty liver disease. This condition blocks up the liver and can cause a wide range of health problems.

Starvation & Detoxing 101:
TRUE or FALSE

The internet is filled with claims that starvation is the key to a good detox diet.
But is that true?

First, I have to share this story with you. Follow me, because it touches upon this very subject.

Recently, I was out at lunch with a friend, who has battled weight issues her entire life. And she emphatically told me weight is a simple mathematical equation:

“You burn more calories than you consume,” she announced, “and voilà! You lose weight!” Well…

I tried to explain to her that she was mistaken, especially since she was going down the starvation route, and ultimately not giving much thought to the quality of the foods that she normally eats.

For example, that day she ordered a cheese steak with large platter of French fries plus cola, while I ordered a grilled eggplant sandwich on rye with sides of hummus and freshly tossed salad plus seltzer water. She justified this by saying that she is not currently on a detox, and later on she will go on a cleanse to remove the toxins.

Again, most detox diets have one thing in common: starvation. They top out at about 700-1000 calories a day. That’s less than half of what the average woman needs to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. So yes, you will lose weight on one of these detox diets—while sacrificing in the long run.

But this is not the way you should detox! Why?

Because you put your body into starvation mode.

So going back to the original question, starvation is not a good idea.

We are all descended from a long line of famine survivors, so your body knows exactly what to do when you don’t eat enough. It slows your metabolism to a crawl so it can stretch what you do eat as far as possible. If you’re eating too little protein, your body will also burn muscle, rather than fat, to sustain critical metabolic processes—and muscle is your biggest, most important fat-burning organ.

The result is that once you start eating normally again, you regain weight, usually fat, because your metabolism is still slow and you have less muscle mass.

Of course, if you do not eat enough for long enough, you will lose weight: this is starvation. Taken to the extreme, certainly those suffering from anorexia do lose weight while starving themselves. However, most of us cannot win against hunger and should never try. (Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder.) When you return to normal eating post-starvation, the weight comes back—with interest. Too many cycles of this, known as "yo-yoing," can destroy your health.

The science is clear.

If you’re serious about detoxing, you must never starve yourself. You have to eat real foods that feed your body—particularly your muscles and your brain—to allow your liver, kidneys, colon and even your skin to do what they already do best: remove toxins and enhance your overall wellbeing.

And when you detox the right way, you’ll be eating food that truly nourishes your body while also giving you the right number of calories to help you lose weight, without your body saying, Whoa! Famine coming! Time to slow things down to stay alive! The result is that that you burn fat, though it typically comes off rather slowly (about 1 to 2 pounds a week). The best part is, it remains off, leaving healthy lean mass in its stead. You’re creating true, long-term improvements that will keep you feeling as good as you look.

So How Do I Get Rid of All This Gunk I've Eaten?

Give your body a true detox—without starving yourself— and your body will jump for joy.

Here’s why.

When you feed your body well during your detox, you will naturally clear your body of the toxins that are part and parcel of modern processed foods.

Most processed foods have a few particular culprits in common: large quantities of sugar, bad fats, and sodium (even in foods that aren’t salty!)—not to mention artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, and residues from industrial methods and packaging that slow your healthy metabolism, while producing systematic inflammation: an underlying cause of such chronic “lifestyle” disorders as diabetes and heart disease.

Detoxing from processed food is key to successfully losing weight—and keeping it off.

You probably don’t even realize how many foods you eat are actually harmful for you—even foods you think are healthy!

  • Agave Sweetener

    This “natural” (but often concentrated) sweetener is the one of highest in pure fructose, and has been linked to risk of fatty liver and elevated triglycerides (blood fats) with excessive use.

  • Diet Soda

    This type of beverage commonly contains artificial sweeteners, which have been linked to weight gain by disrupting important gut bacteria and hormonal signals. It also causes side effects ranging from headaches and digestive issues in the short term, to seizures, blood clots, chronic fatigue syndrome, and even organ failure with high and/or long-term consumption. While full-sugar versions are definitely not recommended alternatives, there are better no-cal sweeteners out there!

  • Regular Margarine

    This popular butter substitute was long thought of as healthy, because it’s made of plant-based oil, which is low in naturally saturated fat. But the process of hardening the oil—called “hydrogenation”—creates artificial trans fats, which your body can’t digest! So instead it increases your LDL (bad) cholesterol and builds up fatty plaque in your arteries, as well as increases your risk for developing cancer. Efforts to ban such trans fats have been somewhat successful, but loopholes have enabled some companies to put out products that still raise health concerns.

  • Regular Soy

    Soy and other legumes are naturally high in anti-nutrients, which can disrupt absorption of some nutrients and increase the excretion of others. These anti-nutrients can be limited by soaking, sprouting, extensive cooking, and especially fermenting—the latter can actually turn soy into a “superfood.” However, be wary of soy products that are highly processed to mimic meat, which often exposes it to harmful chemical residues that can wreak havoc on your metabolism.

  • Deli Meat

    Based on a recent review by the World Health Organization, processed meat increases the risk of cancer! This is due to carcinogenic “nitrite” compounds that are added during the salting and curing process, as well as cooking methods that produce higher amounts of carcinogenic chemicals, both of which are linked to an increased risk of cancer.

  • Whole Wheat Bread

    Unlike 100% whole grain bread, regular whole wheat bread is actually no healthier than regular white bread. Both “whole” wheat and white flour breads have a high glycemic index, meaning that the sugar breaks down to glucose very quickly and raises your blood sugar levels. So when you buy bread, be sure to check the ingredients and watch out for “caramel coloring”! Some brands artificially color their bread brown, making it appear healthy, when in fact, it is not!

Think about it

So many people buy whole wheat bread thinking it’s a healthier alternative to regular white bread. But is that true?

When researchers measured the glycemic index of white bread vs. wheat bread, they discovered that there was no significant difference between the two!

In other words, whole wheat bread causes your blood sugar to spike just as much as white bread does.
